Before every first meeting
Meet in public. A café, a game, a concert, a busy trail head — not someone's home or car.
Tell someone. Share who you're meeting, where, and when you expect to be back. Share your live location with a friend if you can.
Get yourself there and back. Keep control of your own transport and keep your phone charged.
Keep money out of it. Never send money, gift cards or financial details to someone you met here. Anyone who asks is not your friend — report them.
Trust your gut. If something feels off, leave. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
Online
Keep conversations in the app until you're comfortable. Moving quickly to other apps, or asking for your number or address early, is a common red flag.
Don't share your home or work address, daily routine, or financial information.
Be wary of profiles that seem too polished, that avoid a video or voice call, that profess strong feelings quickly, or that have a sudden emergency requiring money.
Use the Block and Report buttons on any profile. Reports are confidential; the other person is not told who reported them.
In person
For a first plan, pick something short and public — a coffee before the show, a daytime hike with others, a game with a group.
Stay sober enough to make decisions, and keep your drink with you.
Don't leave with someone, or go somewhere private, before you know them well.
Group plans are great for first meetings: invite more than one person from your "Go together" suggestions.
Outdoors and sports
Match the activity to your real ability and tell the group about any limits. Check weather and trail conditions; bring water, layers and a charged phone.
For hikes, water sports and winter sports, prefer organised groups, daylight hours and popular routes for first outings.
If something goes wrong
If you're in immediate danger, call 911 (Canada/US) or your local emergency number.
Report the person in the app, or e-mail [email protected]. We take reports of threats, harassment and assault seriously and will cooperate with law enforcement.
Support in BC: VictimLinkBC 1-800-563-0808 (24/7, multilingual).
